QUINOA – The Ancient Grain

For more than 5,000 years, humans have consumed the seeds of the quinoa plant, which is native to the Andes in South American.

Grown primarily for its small, hard seeds (also referred to as grains) quinoa is technically not a grain. Unlike wheat, barley, corn and oats which are grasses, a quinoa seed can sprout into a leafy, edible vegetable.

Quinoa’s superior nutritional value sets it apart.

NATURE’S POWER FOOD

Unlike true grain crops (grasses including wheat, corn, and barley), quinoa seeds can sprout into leafy plants whose leaves are edible. Quinoa’s small, hard seeds are extraordinarily rich in nutrients necessary to humans. That’s why NASA has listed quinoa among candidate crops for its Controlled Ecological Life System program.
